OVERVIEW

The Bob Bellear Sportsground is a high-quality, low-cost, minimal-maintenance sporting facility commissioned by the Byron Shire Council. Containing change/restroom facilities for sporting groups and visitors, it also has a kiosk and referee room with shower. The low-tech building is strong on both passive and active environmental inclusions, harvesting water from the roof to charge showers and toilets, with solar cells used for water heating. The western elevation closes completely to the sun via a ventilated shade screen, drawing in cool air and expelling odours and thermal gain through a high aluminium screen on the opposite side. The form of the building was generated to allow a long raised covered concrete platform, providing both a slab edge for spectators to sit along, as well as an all-weather area with protected kiosk access. A grassy run-on ramp links the change rooms to the sports field.
